The ILR office staff opens the office from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on days when VBHEC is open. During these hours, at least one of our two part-time staff members will be in. If you need to visit the office, it is best to call ahead.
The office is closed for ODU holidays and VBHEC campus closings.
Class Registration Policies
How to Register
Members register in classes using the registration form sent out quarterly. Using this form members:
- Indicate the classes they will attend
- Calculate the total cost of the chosen programs
- Return the form and check for the amount of the selected programs
- No registrations are taken over the phone
The administrators process registration forms in the order received. Registrations for a class that is full are placed on the class waiting list.
The Waiting List
When a program’s registrations exceed the program’s capacity, excess registrations are placed on the program’s waiting list. The waiting list functions as follows:
- A waiting list is maintained for all classes and social/travel events.
The waiting list is based on the principle of “first come, first served.”
- Members are encouraged to make their class selections and return their registration forms promptly to prevent being “wait listed.”
Incomplete Registration Forms
The processing of incomplete forms is a time-consuming and burdensome job. Please assist us by making sure your membership and registration forms are accurate and complete. This includes including the “tear-off” information strips for activities.
Members always have priority to attend any of our functions. Guests are welcome if there is space available. If an activity becomes full, guests will be removed to make space for members. Call the office to check. The applicable class or activity fee must be paid for the guest.
Class Cancellation Policies
If a member cancels a program at least 4 days in advance, they will receive a refund voucher (minus a $2 administrative fee).
If a member cancels a trip, the cancellation will be processed as described in the trip cancellation policy.
If ILR cancels a class, the members will receive a full refund voucher for a class.
If ILR cancels a trip, the members will receive a full refund check for a trip.
Old Dominion University and ODU Virginia Beach Higher Education Center follow a common inclement weather closing policy. ILR does not have access to the building so ILR must cancel events held at the VBHEC when the university is closed.
If there is a 1-2 hour delayed opening, any ILR morning class is cancelled, but any afternoon class will go on, unless we notify members by phone and/or email.
Closing and Delay Information
For up-to-date ODU closing and delay information:
- Check local radio and TV stations (3, 10, and 13). The ODU home page also shows ODU closings.
Call the ODU main campus info line: 683-3000 (has a recorded message)
- Check our home page. If at all possible, we will update it to indicate program cancellations.
A name tag is issued to all members. We request that you wear it to all class meetings and special events. It is useful for meeting new friends. You may fill out the back of the card indicating any health information in the event of an emergency.
